Why VINLytix exists

Most VIN sites answer a question nobody asked. VINLytix is built around the one people actually have.

The problem

Someone looking at a used car has one question: should I buy this, and what should I pay? What they typically get instead is either a wall of decoded VIN fields with no interpretation, or a “free check” that turns into a payment form the moment it has something to show them.

Both fail the same way. Raw data does not become a decision on its own, and a result held hostage is not a result. Meanwhile the genuinely important information — that the report never looked at accident history, that no record found is not the same as no accident — tends to be either absent or in the smallest type on the page.

What we built instead

VINLytix turns a VIN into a decision. One required field. The vehicle identified from official federal data, safety recalls checked, mileage assessed against what is normal for the age, and a price comparison when you supply the asking price. Then a Deal Score, a verdict, and a checklist adapted to what was actually found.

Alongside it, a second number that most services would rather not show you: Data Coverage. It says how much of the relevant record we were able to verify. A car can look like a good deal on information that is 45% complete, and you are entitled to know which situation you are in.

What we refuse to do

These are not aspirations. They are constraints the product is built around.

  • We do not invent market values. With no licensed pricing provider connected, the report says valuation is unavailable. It does not produce a plausible-looking number from the VIN.
  • We never call a vehicle “clean”. The strongest phrasing anywhere in a report is “no issue was found in the data that was checked”. Absence of a record is not evidence of absence.
  • We do not imply we checked accident history. We did not. Every report says so in its own section, not in a footnote.
  • We do not scrape protected sources. Official public APIs where they exist, licensed providers where they do not. Some sections of the report are therefore empty, and labelled as such.
  • We do not overclaim the Deal Score. It is a heuristic for comparing listings, not a validated model, and it says so on every report.

What this costs you

Nothing, and there is no account. There is no step where the report stops and asks for a card. If VINLytix carries advertising in future it will be clearly marked and will not sit between you and your result.

What VINLytix is not

It is not a mechanical inspection, a guarantee of condition, a complete vehicle history report, or a substitute for verifying the title. It cannot see rust, hear a failing bearing, or know that the timing belt is overdue.

Before money changes hands on any used car: buy a full history report, pay an independent mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection, and verify the title yourself. Use VINLytix to decide which cars are worth that effort — that is the job it is good at.

Independence

VINLytix is an independent service. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of NHTSA or any other government agency, any vehicle manufacturer, or any dealership. Vehicle specification and recall data come from NHTSA’s public APIs; using them does not imply any relationship.
