How to read a VIN
Seventeen characters, and none of them are random. Here is what each block tells you, and which parts are worth checking by eye before you run a decode.
The structure
Since the 1981 model year, every vehicle built for the US market carries a standardised 17-character VIN. It divides into three parts: who built it, what it is, and which one it is.
Country of assembly
1, 4 and 5 are the United States; 2 is Canada; 3 is Mexico; J is Japan; K is South Korea; L is China; S is the United Kingdom; W is Germany; V is France or Spain; Y is Sweden or Finland; Z is Italy.
Manufacturer and division
Together with position 1 these form the World Manufacturer Identifier. 1HG is Honda in the USA; WBA is BMW in Germany; 5YJ is Tesla in Fremont, California.
Vehicle descriptor section
Model line, body style, engine, restraint system and series. Each manufacturer defines its own scheme here, which is why decoding needs a database rather than a lookup table.
Check digit
A checksum computed from the other sixteen characters. It catches the great majority of typos and transpositions. Mandatory for vehicles built to US specification, optional elsewhere.
Model year
A rolling 30-character cycle. Letters A–Y (excluding I, O, Q, U and Z) then digits 1–9. For example L is 2020, M is 2021, N is 2022, P is 2023, R is 2024, S is 2025, T is 2026.
Assembly plant
The specific factory that built the vehicle. Manufacturer-defined, and useful for matching parts and for recall campaigns that are limited to one plant's output.
Sequential production number
The serial that makes this VIN unique to one vehicle. This is the portion VINLytix masks on reports, because it is the part that individually identifies your car.
Worked example
Take 1HGCM82633A004352, a well-known example VIN:
- 1HG — Honda, built in the United States
- CM826 — the vehicle descriptor: model line, body and engine
- 3 — the check digit
- 3 — model year 2003
- A — assembly plant
- 004352 — the sequential production serial
You can read country, manufacturer and rough age by eye in about five seconds. For the model, engine, trim and drivetrain you need the manufacturer’s data, which is what a decoder is for.
Checking a VIN by eye
Three checks take almost no time and catch most problems:
- Count the characters. Exactly seventeen. Not sixteen, not eighteen.
- Look for I, O or Q. They never appear. Any character that looks like an O is a zero.
- Check position 1 against the badge. A car sold as American-built starting with J, W or K is not necessarily a problem, but it is worth understanding why.
The check digit is the fourth test and the only one you cannot do in your head. Run the VIN through the decoder and VINLytix verifies it automatically.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a VIN never contain the letters I, O or Q?
Because they are too easily confused with the digits 1 and 0. The standard excludes all three from every position of the VIN, in every market. If you have typed one, you have misread a character — the O in a VIN is always a zero.
How do I read the model year from a VIN?
Position 10 encodes it on a 30-character rolling cycle using letters A through Y (excluding I, O, Q, U and Z) followed by digits 1 through 9. Because the cycle repeats every 30 years, position 10 alone is ambiguous between, say, 1994 and 2024 — the rest of the VIN and the vehicle's obvious age resolve it.
What is the check digit and how does it work?
Each character is converted to a number using a fixed transliteration table, multiplied by a positional weight, and the products are summed. The remainder when divided by 11 is the check digit, written as X if it comes to 10. Can I tell the trim level from the VIN?
Sometimes. Trim lives in the vehicle descriptor section at positions 4 to 8, but how completely a manufacturer encodes it varies, and how completely it reports that to NHTSA varies again. Some VINs decode with a precise trim, others return a blank field. Where the trim matters to the price, check the window sticker or build sheet as well.
Do motorcycles and trailers have VINs?
Yes. The same 17-character standard applies to motorcycles, trailers, and most road-going vehicles built for the US market from the 1981 model year. Decoding coverage for smaller manufacturers is often thinner than for cars.
