What the decoder returns
VINLytix queries NHTSA vPIC — the Vehicle Product Information Catalog, the official US federal database of vehicle specifications submitted by manufacturers. It is free, public and authoritative for build specification.
- Identity: model year, make, model and trim
- Body: body class, number of doors, vehicle type
- Powertrain: engine displacement, cylinders, configuration, fuel type
- Drivetrain: drive type and transmission style where submitted
- Origin: manufacturer, assembly plant city and country
- Everything else: the remaining populated vPIC fields, behind “View full specifications”
Most VIN sites stop at that list. A wall of decoded fields does not answer the question you actually have, which is whether to buy the car and what to pay. So the same lookup also runs a recall check, a mileage analysis if you supply the odometer reading, and a price comparison if you supply the asking price.
How VIN decoding works
A VIN is not a serial number with an arbitrary value. It is structured, and the structure has been standardised worldwide since the 1981 model year:
- Positions 1–3 — the World Manufacturer Identifier: who built it, and where
- Positions 4–8 — the vehicle descriptor: model, body, engine, restraint system
- Position 9 — the check digit, a checksum over the other sixteen characters
- Position 10 — model year
- Position 11 — assembly plant
- Positions 12–17 — the sequential production serial unique to this vehicle
The letters I, O and Q never appear anywhere in a VIN, because they are too easily confused with 1 and 0. If you have typed one, you have misread a character — VINLytix says so rather than silently failing. Read the full breakdown of all 17 positions.
The check digit
Position 9 is a checksum calculated from the other sixteen characters. VINLytix verifies it on every lookup, which catches the overwhelming majority of typos and transpositions before you waste time on a bad decode.
A failed check digit is reported as a warning, not a rejection. The check digit is mandatory for vehicles built to US specification but optional elsewhere, so a privately imported European or Japanese-market car can fail it legitimately. For a car sold new in the United States, a failure almost always means a mistyped character.

What can a VIN decode not tell me?
A decode describes how the car left the factory. It cannot tell you about accidents, title brands, odometer history, ownership, service records, or the current mechanical condition. Every VINLytix report lists those explicitly as not checked, rather than letting silence imply good news.
Why does my VIN return incomplete specifications?
vPIC coverage varies by manufacturer and model year. Older vehicles and low-volume models often carry fewer populated fields, and some manufacturers submit more detail than others. VINLytix shows what came back and reflects the gap in the Data Coverage percentage rather than filling it in.
Can I decode a VIN that is not 17 characters?
No. The 17-character standard has applied to vehicles built for the US market since the 1981 model year. Vehicles older than that use shorter, manufacturer-specific formats that the modern decoder cannot read.
