BMW VIN Decoder
BMW VINs distinguish between German-built and American-built cars at the prefix. The X3, X4, X5, X6 and X7 are built in Spartanburg, South Carolina and carry a 5UX prefix; most other models carry the German WBA or WBS codes.

BMW WMI prefixes
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. For BMW they identify both the manufacturer and, usually, the country and plant of assembly.
| WMI | What it identifies |
|---|---|
| WBA | BMW AG, Germany — standard passenger cars |
| WBS | BMW M GmbH, Germany — M models |
| WBY | BMW AG, Germany — i-series electric models |
| 5UX | BMW Manufacturing, South Carolina — X-series SUVs |
| 4US | BMW Manufacturing, South Carolina — passenger cars |
| WBX | BMW AG — X1 and smaller crossovers |
These are BMW’s common assignments, not a complete register. Manufacturers hold many WMI codes and are allocated more over time. The decode itself comes from NHTSA, not from this table.
What to know about BMW VINs
WBS means a genuine M car
BMW M GmbH holds its own manufacturer code. A real M3 or M5 carries a WBS prefix, not WBA. This is the single most useful check when a listing advertises an M car — an M Sport trim on a standard 3 Series is a different thing entirely, and it will decode as WBA.
US-built X models are not imports
A 5UX prefix on an X5 means Spartanburg, South Carolina. BMW builds X-series SUVs in the United States and exports them worldwide; a US-built X5 is entirely standard.
The check digit is present on US-market cars
European-market BMWs are not required to carry a valid position-9 check digit. A BMW imported outside the normal US channel can therefore fail the checksum legitimately — VINLytix reports this as a warning rather than rejecting the VIN.
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell a real BMW M car from an M Sport trim?
Check the first three characters. WBS is BMW M GmbH — a genuine M model. WBA is a standard BMW, which may still carry the M Sport appearance package. This is the most common misrepresentation in BMW listings, and the VIN settles it in three characters.
What does a BMW VIN starting with 5UX mean?
5 is the United States and UX is BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina plant, which builds the X3, X4, X5, X6 and X7. It is a factory-correct origin, not a grey import.
Why does my BMW VIN fail the check digit test?
The position-9 check digit is mandatory for vehicles built to US specification but optional elsewhere. A European-specification BMW brought into the country privately can fail the checksum and still be a completely legitimate VIN. If the car was sold new in the US, re-read the VIN carefully — it is far more likely to be a typo.
