Ford WMI prefixes
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. For Ford they identify both the manufacturer and, usually, the country and plant of assembly.

What to know about Ford VINs
Truck VINs encode cab and bed
On F-Series trucks the descriptor section distinguishes regular, SuperCab and SuperCrew bodies, and drive configuration. That is why a decoded F-150 report tends to be more specific about body style than a decoded sedan.
Chassis-cab and incomplete vehicles use 1FD
A 1FD prefix usually means the vehicle left Ford as an incomplete chassis for a body builder — box trucks, ambulances, utility bodies. Specifications from the VIN describe the chassis, not the body that was fitted afterwards.
Mustang engine codes are readable
The engine position in a Mustang VIN separates EcoBoost, GT and specialty variants. If a listing claims a GT, the engine field on the report is a direct check against it.

How do I tell an F-150 trim from the VIN?
The VIN reliably identifies the model line, cab style, bed and engine. Marketing trim names — XLT, Lariat, Platinum, King Ranch — are not always fully encoded, so the report may show a body and engine without a trim name. Cross-check the window sticker or the door jamb build label.
Where is the VIN stamped on a Ford truck frame?
Usually on the top or outside face of the frame rail, most often on the driver's side toward the rear wheel. It is often dirty — a wipe with a rag usually brings it up. Confirm it matches the windshield and door jamb.
What does a Ford VIN starting with 3FA mean?
3 is the country code for Mexico, so 3FA is a Ford passenger car assembled in Mexico — Fusion production, for example, ran there. It is a normal, factory-correct origin for a US-market Ford.
