VIN Decoder
Toyota VIN Decoder
Toyota builds for the US market on three continents, so two Camrys of the same model year can carry completely different VIN prefixes. The first character tells you which: a 4 or 5 means it was assembled in the United States, a 2 means Canada, and a J means Japan.

Toyota WMI prefixes
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. For Toyota they identify both the manufacturer and, usually, the country and plant of assembly.
| WMI | What it identifies |
|---|---|
| JTD | Toyota, built in Japan — passenger cars |
| JTM | Toyota, built in Japan — SUVs and crossovers |
| JTH | Lexus, built in Japan |
| 4T1 | Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky — passenger cars |
| 5TD | Toyota, Indiana — minivans and large SUVs |
| 5TF | Toyota, Texas / Indiana — trucks |
| 2T1 | Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada — Corolla and RAV4 |
These are Toyota’s common assignments, not a complete register. Manufacturers hold many WMI codes and are allocated more over time. The decode itself comes from NHTSA, not from this table.
What to know about Toyota VINs
Trim is often reported as Series
Toyota tends to populate the Series field rather than the Trim field in NHTSA's database. A Camry may decode with Series 'SE' and a blank Trim. VINLytix reads both and shows whichever is present, so you still see the trim rather than an empty row.
Hybrid variants share a body code
The Camry Hybrid and the Camry share much of their vehicle descriptor section. The engine and fuel-type fields are what separate them, which is why VINLytix shows fuel type on the vehicle card rather than burying it in the full specifications.
Lexus decodes as its own make
Lexus VINs carry their own WMI codes and decode with Make 'Lexus', not 'Toyota'. If you are checking a Lexus, the report will say Lexus even though Toyota built it.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the VIN on a Toyota Tacoma or Tundra?
The windshield and driver's door jamb carry it as on any Toyota, but both trucks also have the VIN stamped into the frame rail. On a used truck it is worth checking the frame stamp matches the windshield plate, because frame replacement and cut-and-shut repairs show up there first.
Why does my Toyota VIN start with a J instead of a 4?
The first character is the country of assembly. J means Japan, 4 and 5 mean the United States, and 2 means Canada. A Japanese-built Toyota is not unusual or a problem — it simply means that car was not assembled in North America.
Can I check Toyota recalls by VIN?
VINLytix shows safety recall campaigns published by NHTSA for the year, make and model. Whether a specific Toyota has had the recall work completed is not in the public API — any Toyota dealer will confirm that free of charge using the VIN, and recall repairs themselves are free.
