Jeep WMI prefixes
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. For Jeep they identify both the manufacturer and, usually, the country and plant of assembly.

What to know about Jeep VINs
Wranglers are heavily modified — the VIN is the baseline
Lifts, re-gears, engine swaps, axle swaps and body changes are common and mostly undocumented. The VIN tells you the factory drivetrain, axle configuration and engine. Comparing that against what is physically on the vehicle is the single most useful check you can run on a used Wrangler.
Rubicon and Sahara are trim, not separate models
These decode within the Wrangler model line, usually via the Series or Trim field. If the report shows no trim, the factory build sheet or window sticker is the authority — do not take a badge on the fender as proof.
Frame corrosion matters more than the decode
On older Wranglers and Cherokees, frame rust is the value-defining issue and no VIN check can see it. Inspect the frame directly, especially around the rear spring mounts and the skid plate.

Can a VIN tell me if a Jeep Wrangler is a genuine Rubicon?
The VIN identifies the model line and often the trim through the Series field, and it identifies the factory axle and drivetrain configuration. That is usually enough to distinguish a Rubicon, because its axles and gearing differ. Where the trim field is blank, obtain the build sheet — fender badges can be, and frequently are, added.
Where is the VIN on a Jeep Wrangler frame?
On the frame rail, typically on the driver's side. It is often obscured by underbody coating or rust on older vehicles. Given how many Wranglers are rebuilt from parts, confirming the frame stamp against the windshield plate is worth the effort.
What does a Jeep VIN starting with 1C4 mean?
1 is the United States and C4 is the Chrysler group's assignment covering current Jeep models. Older Jeeps carry 1J4 or 1J8 from before the brand's VIN codes were consolidated under Chrysler.
